ASTRONOTES #257 Corresponds to Previews December 2016
Hey, hi, howdy, and welcome to
Astronotes #257. Well our "special treat' from last month got smoothed out
pretty quickly, when one of Diamond's retailer liason honchos pointed out to
the IT folks that while they may say that repeating every damned slug is a
feature, if that's countered by 1500 retailers saying it's lousy, you can be
pretty sure it's a bug. So they cleaned it up PDQ, and this month we get the
order codes and a pretty clear indication of what's a variant cover and
what's not. Very nice. A bit time consuming, but nice.
Speaking of variant covers, "theme" variants have been all the rage
lately, and Marvel, at the aftback as always (listen, if a redundancy like
"forefront" is acceptable, what's wrong with "aftback" as
an antonym?). Anyways, Marvel's theme for February shipping variants will be
"cover corners". If you know those little "portraits" that
Mavel had as part of the price box upper left corners 50-odd years ago(!),
that's what a corner cover looks like, except full cover size. All 20 are being
done by Joe Jusko, so we know that they're gonna be nice. Only problem is that
they're all going to be "targeted", which means we'll at least twice
as much of a issue as we regularly would to be able to buy a variant, so we
can't expect to just get them on demand as we customarily could.
Final thought: Concerned over the paucity of new stuff being offered by the big
two, I did a little research: You know, they're introducing titles at just
about the same rate as they did in the seventies and early eighties, just a
handful a month. Then Marvel went berserk in the early 90's when "Matt
Sauce", this completely moronic marketing director they had then decided a
good strategy was to create so many titles that there'd be no room for anyone
else's. Well that (quite predictably) failed, as did so many other Marvel
"initiatives" of the mid-nineties. My favorite was when some dimwit
there decided it would be a good idea to get heavily into the sports trading
card market about a year after that market collapsed. They bought two
companies; Fleer, and Skybox, for a combined $260,000,000. (that's 2650 million).
They sold off the pair just two years later. A $234 million dollar loss from
jumping into a position in something that had already fallen off a cliff...
(Boy and we complain when the government puts a bridge in the wrong place or
spends a couple of billion on a G7 get-together. We're such pikers...)
Anyways, Marvel and DC are back to cruising along, putting out just a handful
of new things each month, while publishers like Boom, IDW, and Dynamite, run by
people who were growing up during the expansionist period when Matt Sauce was
in charge of Marvel marketing, so they think that cranking new titles out like
sausages is normal. In the mean time, enduring characters like Wolverine,
Punisher, Hellblazer, Swamp Thing, and the odd indy like TMNT came along when
the new title fires were burning low, and we can see where they went.
So look- go through the catalogs and racks with an eye towards finding diamonds
in the rough. Never know where and when they'll pop up.

Is it 30 years already? My wife and I went to the preview showing of Highlander, mainly because I won tickets on some radio call-in. Now back when we started going to the flicks, a first-run admission was about $2.50. As time went on, we started rating them by how much we wouldn't have minded paying, from $6, which was the going rate about 100 movies into a period when we went to 160 of them in a six month period, and ended about the time that video stores started showing up. Anyways, Highlander rated a dollar, the price at a repertory cinema. We were both quite happy we didn't actually pay to see the thing.

Maybe just a tiny bit of an impressionist in his prints, but abstract, no. By the way, "Persistence of Memory", Dali's famous "melting watches" painting, which hangs in MOMA New York, is always disappointing at first sight: It's a tiny thing, almost the same dimensions as a legal size sheet of paper, but taking a close look, the brilliance and clarity of his brushwork shines through.

It's good to see that Marvel's knocking out a fresh batch of "True Believers"- cheap reprints of important chapers in their various characters' stories. Not only do you get good stories (albeit ones where you already know how any cliffhangers resolve), but, should you want to actually see what happens next, they're generally lead-ins to ever-available trade paperbacks. You don't have to take a chance on a $20 book sight unseen, you have a sweet little sampler for just a buck.

when bargains came their way.
Well, as it happens, I had a Hulk 181 (first full appearance of Wolverine)
priced at $100-$150 less than what it would go for around town, or so I was
told, and I figured it was perfect for a "cheap show". Not even a
nibble. A Montreal dealer later told me, "Ottawa? Bag and board some
pocket lint and you can sell it in Ottawa for four bucks. Put a $20 bill in the
bag, and they won't buy it for six. Well, I sold that 181 a week or two later,
no problem, but working that Ottawa con reaffirmed something a local folksinger
once said: Ottawa is living proof that anal intercourse can cause pregnancy.

Sold out at the distributors, sold out at Marvel. They had a hit on a very

format and $2.95 or so.) Anyways, it was hard to get- it was even advertised in
Comics Buyer's Guide at a premium price by miscellaneous mail-order dealers.
Hard to get everywhere but Montreal: At one of the conventions held at the
Chateaubriand Hotel on Cote de Liesse here, there was a guy dragging a long box
full of them around, selling them for a quarter a piece, all you wanted. Being
new at the game, I asked an acquaintance if he knew what the deal was. He said,

I was something of a museum fan, and
this gives me the opportunity to share a couple of anecdotes:
One day, entering the American Museum of Natural History, there was a bit of a
kerfuffle at the "ticket booth" (which was more like a store checkout
counter than a booth): They had a sign up that read "You may pay as little
as you like, but you must pay something." A visitor was giving the
cashier a hard time, saying that he only wanted to pay a dime. She said that
was okay. He insisted that it wasn't enough. She replied that he should read
the sign, a dime was enough. "Isn't." "Is”. Back and forth.
After a couple of minutes arguing, she called security, and the guard
practically forced the guy in. Just a bit of New York weirdness.
Coming out of MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) one day, a panhandler hits me for
spare change. I dipped into my pocket, pulled out a few coins, and held them
out. The guy glances in my hand and sniffs "I don't take Canadian."
Excuse me all to hell Mr.Beggar, very shoddy of me trying to give you something
as disreputable as Canadian money. Last one:
For many years in the late 60's-70's, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts had a
nice marble sculpture on the main floor, in the gallery behind the grand
staircase. An abstract, basically a 6-8 foot tall prolate spheroid (elongated
football) shape with a large oval hole through it. The card read "Artist
unknown. In later years, it was moved outdoors to the garden cafe. Turns out it
wasn't a "pure" work of art, it was something commissioned by a
marble quarry in Italy to demonstrate that despite marble's fragility, you
could carve a big hole through theirs without having the stone shatter. Our
museum- proudly displaying a salesman's sample as art.
Okay, that's enough. But you know, despite the act that I've been to museums
from the Getty in L.A. to the leper's hospital in Tracadie New Brunswick, I've
never been to the Redpath here in Montreal? Maybe someday if I can walk well
enough again...
