Astronotes #199(?) Corresponds to Previews February 2012
Hey,
hi, howdy, and welcome to Astronotes # somethinglike 199, where we're filled
with ennui while gearing down for the *yawn* big (or maybe just
regular-sized #200!
There. A big 200. Happy now?
Anyways, this month looks like the various publishers are starting to wake up
again, with Image, Dark Horse, and Dynamite presenting some interesting new
projects, while DC and Marvel continue their fierce battle to see who can put
us to sleep the fastest.
Read on, MacDuff!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++DC COMICS
Well, the December 2011 numbers are in, and DC has slipped
back to #2, just slightly behind Marvel in both pieces and dollars shipped. No
real surprise there- it's just a bit disconcerting to realise how very strong
Marvel's brand really is. I didn't expect them to regain #1 quite that fast: I
think I sort of predicted six months to a year, but this is just four. It's
also somewhat dismaying to read the DC solicits, and really, they seem
interchangeable with the ones from a year or two or three ago. There just
doesn't seem to be anything new happening. At least with Paul Levitz, the
company seemed open to different ideas; not necessarily in character or
continuity, but in its whole approach towards things: We had successes and
failures (mostly failures), things like the Vertigo, CMX, Helix, Paradox,
Milestone and Humanoids lines, even the whole "reprint everything in TPB
format" thing, an idea that truly revolutionised the whole industry. Much
as I like Dan Didio (and, to a lesser extent Jim Lee), I just don't see any vision
there, no energy.
Anyways, going in, the DC people had no illusions about the "New52"
thing establishing a line for eternity: They said all title would have at least
six issues to establish an audience before there would be any chops. Face front
true believers, and accept reality: Not everything's a winner. This month we
see the first batch of losers: Static Shock, Hawk & Dove, Blackhawks and Men
of War. I doubt that anyone in the world is the least bit surprised that these
titles were the first to get the axe, their early demise was predicted by
industry pros even before the first issues shipped.

I really like that: Marvel wasted no time in "acronymizing" Avengrs Versus X-Men into "AvX". (I've even seen some cover art that shows the title that way.) Less typing- Less spelling mistakes that need to be fixed! Thanks, Marvel! Oops- spelled "Avengrs" wrong. That wasn't intentional, honest, but it does prove my point.

SC, 5x8, 116pgs, FC$14.95
I've heard from one of the folks behind "Stargazer" and "The Road To God Knows", who heavily praises and recommends "Princeless", particularly for adolescent readers, but still very enjoyable for adults as well. Unfortunately the early single issues weren't available in Ottawa (where our correspondant lives), and her favourite store in Montreal (that's us) is sold out. So is Diamond.

Apropos of nothing, I'd love to see Antarctic's take on the Rape of Nanking, an event so horrific that even the nazis resident in Nanking at the time were revulsed. I expect Dunn and company would find a way to turn the butchers into something cute and charming.

Steam WILL save the world!

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME HC
Tim Conrad (W/A)
On sale June 20
FC, 48 pages$12.99
HC, 7" x 10"
Tim Conrad adapts Victor Hugo's classic romance about a beautiful gypsy girl, Esmeralda, who is framed for murder by the infatuated Archdeacon of Notre Dame. Only Quasimodo, the hideously deformed bell-ringer of the cathedral, can save her.
Religious extremism, class distinction, fate, destiny, and sexual dynamics are played out in a rousing yarn of intrigue within the walls of the Parisian cathedral of Notre Dame.
It was Quasimodo's "hideous deformity" that
enabled him to work: His tremendous upper body strength enabled him to hold
onto the ropes as the bells tolled, avoiding his being flung out of the belfry
as they lashed about.
One day, when he called in sick with the sniffles, his twin sibling, Realmodo
(Real- not just Quasi) filled in for him. Unfortunately, Real couldn't hang
onto the ropes, was flung out over the edge, and fell to his death on the
street far below. Two passers-by, Lucien and Jacques, witnessed the accident.
Turning from the mangled corpse, Lucien turned to Jacques and said:
"How horrible! But this poor fellow looks familiar. Do you know who he
is?" Jacques replied: "Why that's Realmodo, and he's a dead ringer
for his brother!"

While living in the nation's capital for two months on a work visa for a French film animation company, Delisle observed what he was allowed to see of the culture and lives of the few North Koreans he encountered; his findings form the basis of this remarkable graphic novel. I have no idea whether "Strangeways is any good or
not, never having heard of it before, but I left it in simply because I was
kinda tickled by the publisher's name, and to justify my natter, I really had
to show what they're offering.
Anyways, "Highway 62" is a very obvious reference to Bob Dylan, and
probably the album "Highway 61 Revisited", the title track of which
summed up the entire Old Testament as beautifully as only a poet of Dylan's
ability could do:
"God says to Abraham
Kill me a son
Abe says
Man, You must be putting me on.
God says
No
Abe says
Wha?
God says
You can do what you want, Abe, but
The next time you see me comin'
You better run.

Arthur can eat her." After being fired, he claimed that he "didn't
mean it that way"...
